The Truth About Writing and Publishing a Book (Part II)

A couple of weeks ago I shared some insight into writing and publishing a book to give you a realistic idea of what to expect should you decide to write and publish your own book.

This week I want to talk to you about another truth: you are going to have a lot of competition and you will need to be realistic.

The fact is, there are millions of books on the market, especially now that authors have access to Amazon Kindle and print-on-demand.  I guarantee that what you want to write about has already been written about many times, from many different perspectives.

So how do you make sure your book sells? Let’s talk about that…

You need to be sure you have some sort of knowledge or wisdom that people will be willing to pay for.

What does that mean?

It means your books needs to have a clear purpose.  It needs to meet a specific need for a specific group of people and it needs to do it in a way that is unique and differentiates you from all other experts in the area you are writing about.

Something that I find helps many authors is when I tell them they don’t need to be the expert on their topic. They just need to be an expert.

As long as you meet the objective you set out for your reader through your book, that is exactly how you will be seen.

Here are a few tips to help you make sure your books stands out from the crowd:

1 Make a list of what you know that you might consider writing about, then prioritise the list in order of what you are most passionate about.

2 Ask yourself these questions:

Is there a reasonable size group of people who want what you have?
Is there a group of people you can really
help?
And are there enough people in your target audience
that would make it worthwhile for you to write and publish a book on your area of expertise?

3 Survey your ideal audience and get crystal clear on what they need help with.

It is important that you are very honest with yourself as you explore the potential for your book.  It is so much better to get clear on your direction and establish a need for your book before you start writing it.
